SMTP / POP3 settings for your email client

This article was updated because of the 'End of Life' support internationally for TLS1.0/1.1 and exploit issues regarding SSL 1-3. Please use the settings below to configure your outlook or other email client program. Switching will make your traffic much more secure and minimize hacking attempts due to the fact that you will be using the latest security standard (TLS 1.2).

If you have issues implementing the patches and settings for email on windows 7 or older versions of outlook, please look to switch to the free Thunderbird email client (see below) or upgrading your Windows OS & email client software to the latest version.

Incoming e-mail 

  • Connections to the servers on ports 110 and 143 are not allowed. 

Outgoing e-mail 

  • Port 25 or 26 are not allowed.
  • Please use port 587 as default sending port and only use port 465 if other port is blocked by your ISP.
  • E-mail clients will be required to connect with SSL/TLS before being allowed to authenticate.

As a result, please review your mail clients for the following settings, adjusting as required:

Incoming Server: chi-node11.websitehostserver.net
IMAP Port: 993 or POP3 Port: 995 
Outgoing Server: chi-node11.websitehostserver.net
SMTP Port: 587 (port 465 is currently also avalable if other port is blocked*)
SMTP Authentication = On
TLS, STARTTLS or AUTO: Enabled (use SSL or SSL/TLS when using port 465*)

NOTE:

  • Authentication is required for IMAP, POP3, and SMTP.
  • If your system asked for a username, then please fill in your complete e-mail address!
  • Email should not be stored under the webmail interface for longer then 90 days (The service is not intended as cloud storage).
  • Your webmail interface is always available for sending/receiving while you or your IT manager updates your system.

Information on SMTP ports

 

Port 465: IANA has reassigned a new service to this port, and it should no longer be used for SMTP communications.
However, because it was once recognized by IANA as valid, there may be legacy systems that are only capable of using this connection method. Typically, you will use this port only if your application demands it. A quick Google search, and you'll find many consumer ISP articles that suggest port 465 as the recommended setup. Hopefully this ends soon! It is not RFC compliant.

Port 587 (recommended): This is the default mail submission port. When a mail client or server is submitting an email to be routed by a proper mail server, it should always use this port. Everyone should consider using this port as default, unless you're explicitly blocked by your upstream network or hosting provider. This port, coupled with TLS encryption, will ensure that email is submitted securely and following the guidelines set out by the IETF.

Port 25: This port continues to be used primarily for SMTP relaying. SMTP relaying is the transmittal of email from email server to email server.
In most cases, modern SMTP clients (Outlook, Mail, Thunderbird, etc) shouldn't use this port. It is traditionally blocked, by residential ISPs and Cloud Hosting Providers, to curb the amount of spam that is relayed from compromised computers or servers. Unless you're specifically managing a mail server, you should have no traffic traversing this port on your computer or server.

Please keep in mind that email should not be stored under the webmail interface for longer then 90 days (The service is not intended as cloud storage).
When using webmail and IMAP in your email client you can sync all your email and send items.
